How to remove desktop ads

How to remove desktop ads

This article will offer different recommendations, each of which has some effect on the display of ads in the operating system. Choose the one you want, or put several of them into practice in a different sequence. Of course, maximum effectiveness will only be achieved if you pay attention to all the steps and apply each one in sequence.

Step 1: Turn off notifications in the lower right corner

Windows 10 and Windows 11 users are facing a situation where various notifications occasionally appear in the bottom right corner of the desktop. These are most likely notifications displayed by your browser or by installed applications. If you want to get rid of these types of messages, read about it in our other article, dedicated only to this topic, at the following link.

Step 2: Find and manually terminate processes

It is likely that a specific process running a malicious program or simply third-party is responsible for displaying ads on the desktop of your operating system. By checking running tasks, you can detect suspicious activity, find out the location of the running file, and decide if it is related to ads. A standard Windows solution is suitable for this.

  1. Push the button "Start". right-click and from the context menu select "Task Manager"..
  2. In the window that appears, click the tab "Details" tab. and starts reading the list of processes.
  3. You can right-click on any of them and select from the context menu «Cancel the task».The process will then complete. If the ads disappear from the desktop, you have found the app you need to get rid of.
  4. If you use the context menu of the same task to go to "Properties"., you will find the location of the executable file.
  5. The only thing you have to do next is locate it by following the indicated path.
  6. Right-click on the destination folder and select from the menu that appears on the screen "Delete". Once the directory is removed, move on to the next step to complete the cleanup of adware or unnecessary software on your computer.

Step 3: Remove unwanted software in Windows

Unfortunately, cleaning the folder of junk files does not always lead to the complete uninstallation of a program that displays ads on the desktop. Also, in some cases it is immediately obvious that the ad is being served through a game launcher or an automatically installed add-on tool for some game that you do not need at all. In these cases, a standard removal of the annoying program will help.

  1. call menu "Start". and through it sails to "Options".clicking on the gear icon.
  2. In the new window, open the section "Applications". and select a category «Applications and features».
  3. After downloading the list of programs, look for the one you think is responsible for displaying ads on the Windows desktop. Click the three dots icon to the right of this box.
  4. In the menu that appears, select "Delete" and confirm the uninstall.

Once you've uninstalled the software, you can move on to cleaning up the junk left over from the standard uninstall. This will be covered in more detail in one of the next steps of our article, but in the meantime, you can read the instructions with other removal methods if the above option does not suit you for some reason.

Step 4: Delete entries in Task Scheduler

It's possible that a program you just removed, or an application you don't know about yet, has created entries in Task Scheduler that link to a specific file and run it at a certain time or every time you start your computer. This is especially noticeable when desktop ads appear at the same time. To resolve the situation, you will need to check the “Task Scheduler” and see if there are any suspicious entries that can be removed.

  1. Open the menu "Start". and search the application "Task Scheduler"and then start it up.
  2. In the app itself, in the left pane, check the list of folders where these tasks are located. If any of them are unknown to you, you should check them out first.
  3. After navigating to the folder in the center table, you will see the created tasks, their status and the triggers to execute them. Double left-click on the task to see it in more detail.
  4. In the new window, go to the tab "Actions". and see what the task does. If it runs a specific program that you don't know the name of, it is very likely that it is advertising.
  5. You can return to the previous window and delete this task via the context menu, which is opened by right-clicking on a line. You can also browse to the location of the file specified in the task to delete it manually. But first, we recommend that you enter the name of the software in any browser's search engine to find out what it is responsible for. If it says that it is an adware virus, just remove it.
  6. When you select the appropriate action, you will have to confirm your intentions by clicking "Yes" in a new window.

Step 5: Clean residues with third-party software

We recommend that you follow this instruction if you have succeeded with the above recommendations in finding suspicious software and removing it. Auxiliary programs will allow you to get rid of junk and unnecessary entries in the registry, which can also interfere with the normal functioning of your PC. We have chosen CCleaner as a simple example.

Download CCleaner

  1. After installing this or any other supporting app, go to "Standard cleaning" or run this process through the main window if that is how the interface is implemented.
  2. Next, select the partitions of the operating system you want to clean and the applications if you want to remove the files of browsers and various installed third-party programs.
  3. The only thing left is to perform the analysis and, once finished, confirm that all the remains found have been cleaned. Afterward, restart your PC and make sure the desktop ads are gone.

If the suggested garbage cleaning method does not suit you, we recommend that you read the alternatives in our other article. Click on the following link to continue reading.

Step 6: Use Windows Defender

Some users do not trust the standard Windows Defender and do not scan the system itself or disable it completely. However, it can detect most common threats, including adware viruses. We recommend that you run a scan through it if the steps performed above have not given the desired result.

  1. Open the menu "Start". and go to the app "Settings"..
  2. In it, select the section "Privacy & Security"found in the left panel, and then navigate to the category "Windows Security"..
  3. In the new window, look for the block «Protection Areas». and click on the element "Protection against viruses and threats".
  4. Now you can run a quick scan, which will be enough to analyze your operating system for threats.
  5. Wait for it to finish and receive a report. If there are files in quarantine, you can remove them completely and then check if the ads disappear from the desktop after restarting the computer.

Step 7: Run the check through the adware removal software

There are special programs that detect installed adware and offer to remove all related files. Often the focus is not on viruses, but on various applications that can be inadvertently installed in Windows and run in the background, occasionally displaying various notifications.

Download Malwarebytes

  1. We have chosen Malwarebytes and offer to download this free program from the official website. However, if you know of any other adware removal software, feel free to use it.
  2. After installing and launching the program, look for the button to start the check.
  3. Wait for this process to finish, keeping track of how many threats have already been found.
  4. In the first results window, you will be notified how many adware programs have been found and which files are responsible for their execution. You can mark all of them and quarantine or delete them.
  5. If you expand the information about each program, a line will appear with information about where the actual file responsible for running ads is located, which will also be useful for further cleaning.
  6. Once you have identified the candidates to be eliminated, click on the button "Following".
  7. In some cases you will be notified that different software is pre-installed in Windows. For the most part, this applies to laptops that already have proprietary software installed on first boot. Here you have to be careful and decide for yourself which of these presets you don't want.
  8. Select them through a separate list if such programs are present on your computer.
  9. Push the button "Quarantine".to remove adware files and protect you from getting more ads on your desktop.
  10. Make sure to wait until this procedure is complete.
  11. You will be notified that the files have been quarantined. Now you can go to the section with them and delete them separately if you need to.

Step 8: Use the antivirus

The most radical step is to use third-party antivirus. Many of them are capable of detecting adware-type viruses instead of harmless applications, such as game lunches that display various advertisements while running in the background. Computers are not usually infected by this type of threat, so we have left this recommendation for last. You can choose any software to scan and protect your computer.
