Opera is slow: how to fix the problem

It is very unpleasant when the browser slows down and the Internet pages load or open too slowly. Unfortunately, no web browser is immune from this phenomenon. It is logical that users seek solutions to this problem. Let's find out why the Opera browser can slow down, and how to fix this malfunction.

Causes of performance problems

First of all, let's describe the range of factors that can negatively affect the speed of the Opera browser.

All the causes of browser slowdowns are divided into two large groups: external and internal.

The main external cause of slow loading speed of web pages is the internet speed provided by your ISP. If you are not satisfied with it, you must change to a higher speed plan or change providers. Although, the Opera browser toolset offers another solution, which we will talk about below.

The internal causes of the slowdown of the browser can be in its configuration or in the incorrect operation of the program, or in the operation of the operating system. We will talk in more detail about ways to solve these problems later.

Solve braking problems

In the following, we will only talk about troubleshooting that the user can handle himself.

Activate Turbo mode

If the main reason why web pages open slowly is the internet speed of your data plan, you can partially solve this problem in Opera browser by activating the special Turbo mode. In this case, the web pages, before being loaded in the browser, are processed on a proxy server, where they are compressed. This saves traffic significantly and, under certain conditions, increases the download speed by up to 90%.

To activate Turbo mode, go to the main menu of the browser and click on "Opera Turbo".

Large number of tabs

Opera can slow down if you have a large number of tabs open at the same time, as in the image below.

If the RAM memory of your computer is not very large, a significant number of open tabs can place a great load on it, which entails not only a slowdown of the browser, but also the collapse of the entire system.

The ways to solve the problem here are two: either do not open a large number of tabs, or do a hardware update of your computer, adding the amount of RAM.

Problems with extensions

A large number of installed extensions can cause a browser slowdown problem. To check if this is the cause, you can disable all plugins in the Extensions Manager. If the browser starts running much faster, this could be the problem. In this case, only the most necessary extensions should be left activated.

However, the browser can become very slow even by a single extension that conflicts with the system or other add-ons. In this case, to identify the problematic item, it is necessary to disable all the extensions, as mentioned above, turn them on one by one, and check after turning on which particular plug-in the browser begins to lag. The use of this element should be abandoned.

Setting settings

It is possible that the browser slowdown is caused by changing important settings that you have made, or that they have been deviated for some reason. If this is the case, it makes sense to reset the settings to their default values.

One of these settings is to enable hardware acceleration. This setting should be enabled by default, but can be disabled for a number of reasons at the moment. To check the status of this function, go to the settings section through Opera's main menu.

Once we are in the Opera settings, click on the name of the section - «Browser».

The window that opens scrolls to the bottom. Find the "Show advanced settings" option and check it.

This is followed by a series of settings that were previously hidden. These settings are distinguished from the rest by a special marking - a gray dot in front of the name. Among these settings we find the option "Use hardware acceleration, if available". It must be marked with a mark. If it is not checked, check it and close the settings.

Also, changing the hidden settings can have a negative impact on the speed of the browser. To restore the default values, go to this section by typing "opera: flags" in the address bar of your browser.

Browser Cleaning

Also, the browser may slow down if it is loaded with unnecessary information. Especially if the cache is full. To delete Opera, go to the settings section in the same way we did to activate hardware acceleration. Then go to the "Security" subsection.

In the "Privacy" block, click the "Clear visit history" button.

A window opens in front of us, asking you to delete various browser data. Those parameters that you consider especially necessary may not be eliminated, but the cache will have to be cleared in any case. When selecting a period, specify "From the beginning". Then click on the "Clear browsing history" button.

Virus

One of the causes of browser slowdown can be a virus on your system. Scan your computer with a reliable antivirus program. It is better that your hard drive is scanned from a different device (not infected).

As you can see, Opera browser slowdown can be caused by many factors. If you have not been able to identify the specific cause of the hang or slow loading of the pages by your browser, it is recommended to apply all the above methods in combination to achieve a positive result.
