Checking the RAM in Windows 10

A large number of Windows 10 diagnostic procedures can be done using both internal tools and third-party solutions. RAM testing is no exception, and we want to start with the last option.

Attention! If you are running a RAM diagnostic to identify a faulty module, the procedure must be done separately for each component: remove all strips and insert them into the PC / laptop one by one before each "run"!

Method 1: Third Party Solution

There are quite a few apps to test RAM, but the best solution for Windows 10 is MEMTEST.

Download MEMTEST.

    1. It is a small utility that does not even need to be installed, so it is distributed as a file with an executable file and the necessary libraries. Unzip it with any suitable archive, find the resulting directory and run the file memtest.exe.

    2. There are not many settings available here. The only configurable feature is the amount of RAM to check. However, it is recommended to leave the default value - "All unused RAM" - because in this case the most accurate result is guaranteed.

If your computer's memory capacity is greater than 4Gb, you will need to use this setting: due to peculiarities of the MEMTEST code, it is not possible to check the capacity of more than 3,5Gb at a time. In this case, it is necessary to run several windows of the program, and in each one of them manually enter the desired value.

    3. Before you start to check it, remember two peculiarities of the program. The first is that the accuracy of the procedure depends on the test time, so it must be run for at least several hours, so the developers themselves recommend running the diagnosis and leaving the computer on overnight. The second peculiarity follows from the first: during the testing process it is better to leave the computer alone, so the "night" variant is the best. To start testing, click «Start testing».

  1. If necessary, the test can be stopped early: use the button "Stop testing.". Also, the procedure stops automatically if the utility encounters errors in the process.

The program helps detect most RAM problems with great precision. Of course, there are also disadvantages: there is no localization in Russian and the error descriptions are not too detailed. Fortunately, the solution at hand has suggested alternatives in the article at the link below.

Method 2: System Tools

The Windows family of operating systems includes a set of tools for basic RAM diagnostics, which has also migrated to the XNUMXth version of Windows. This solution does not provide as much detail as a third-party program, but it will serve for the initial check.

  1. The easiest way to call the correct utility is through the tool "Run".. Press the key combination Win + R.Type the command in the text box mjed and press "AGREE"..
  2. There are two validation options available, we recommend selecting the first one, "Perform reboot and verification." - click the left mouse button.
  3. The computer will restart and the RAM Diagnostic Tool will start. The procedure starts immediately, but you can change some parameters during the process by pressing the key. F1.

Not too many options available: check type can be customized (option "Normal". is sufficient in most cases), the cache activation, and the number of test passes (normally it is not necessary to set values higher than 2 or 3). You can scroll through the options by pressing the key. TAB, save your settings with the key F10.

  4. When the procedure is complete, the computer will restart and display the results. However, sometimes this may not happen. In this case you must open «Event log»: press Win + REnter the following command in the window eventvwr.msc and press "AGREE"..

Then find the category information. "Information". With fountain "MemoryDiagnostics-Results" and see the results at the bottom of the window.

This tool may not be as informative as third-party solutions, but it should not be underestimated, especially by novice users.

Conclusion:

We have reviewed the RAM check procedure in Windows 10 using a third-party program and a built-in tool. As we can see, the methods are not too different from each other and, in principle, they can be considered interchangeable.
