How to make a portable browser the default

Many users use portable browsers (those that do not require installation on the computer), the most common being Google Chrome, Firefox or Opera. These types of browsers do not appear in the list of available to install by default in Windows 10 settings, but there is also a solution for them.

Generally, the necessary actions involve editing the registry, however, there are ways to speed up the process:

  • For the Mozilla Firefox Portable browser, there is a small third-party utility, "RegisterFirefoxPortable", which makes the necessary changes and adds the portable version of Firefox to the default browser selection list. The program is available on the developer's site (the utility is no longer new, but according to reviews it still works).
  • The Chrome Portable browser can be added to the list of available by default with a simple .vbs script from the same author (create the script, put it in the folder with the browser's .exe file, launch it, enter REGISTER in the request window and press Ok), you may need to rename the browser's .exe file in your code. The script code is available on this page.
  • For the Opera browser, you can use the following .reg file (how to create a reg file) to add it to the list of default browsers. Warning: The browser path (C: peralauncher.exe, found several times in the code) must be replaced by your own.

The second way to assign a default browser

Warning: this method only works for older versions of Windows 10. Another option to make the desired browser the default (helps when the usual method does not work for some reason) is to use the corresponding item in the Windows 10 Control Panel. To do this, do the following:

  1. Go to the Control Panel (for example, by right-clicking the Start button), put the "View" field in "Icons" and open the "Default Programs" option.
  2. In the next window, select "Set default programs". Updated: In recent versions of Windows 10, clicking this item opens the corresponding settings section. If you want to open the old interface, press Win + R and enter the command control / name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms / page pageDefaultProgram
  3. Find the browser you want to be the default for Windows 10 in the list and click "Use this program as default."
  4. Click OK.

Once this is done, the browser you have selected will now open all the types of documents for which it is intended.

Update: If you have found that some links (in Word documents, for example) keep opening in Internet Explorer or Edge after setting the default browser, try the Default application Settings (in the System section, where we change the default browser), at the bottom by clicking on Selection of default applications for protocolsand replace these applications for those protocols in which the old browser remains.

In some cases, it may not be necessary to change the default browser in Windows 10, but simply to have certain types of files open with a different browser. For example, you may need to open xml and pdf files in Chrome, but still use Edge, Opera, or Mozilla Firefox.

A quick way to do this is as follows: right-click on that file and select "Properties". Next to "Application" click "Change" and set the browser (or other program) with which you want to open these types of files.
